To this day, mice suffocate for smooth foreheads. That may soon end: the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM) has announced it will gradually remove the cruel mouse test for Botox from the European Pharmacopoeia<\/strong>. Doctors Against Animal Experiments (\u00c4rzte gegen Tierversuche) calls it the payoff of almost two decades of campaigning.<\/p>\n

What happened?<\/p>\n

The EDQM and the European Pharmacopoeia Commission are reinstating their working group on botulinum toxin. It is tasked with developing a roadmap for phasing out the LD50 mouse test<\/strong> and revising the corresponding texts of the European Pharmacopoeia. The EDQM announced the step on 7 August; the German medical association \u00c4rzte gegen Tierversuche (\u00c4gT) assessed it publicly on 25 August.<\/p>\n

There are no binding deadlines yet, and that is exactly what \u00c4gT is now demanding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Botulinum toxin, better known as Botox, has medical uses, for instance against eyelid spasms or certain movement disorders. Mostly, though, the nerve toxin serves to smooth wrinkles. For quality control, mice are exposed to varying doses: they suffer paralysis and respiratory distress, and many suffocate in agony. The so-called LD50 test<\/strong> determines the dose lethal to half of the animals and is classified as “severe” under EU law, the highest severity grade.<\/p>\n

The absurd part: reliable cell-based, animal-free test methods have been available for years<\/strong>. How many mice are used annually for Botox tests, for which purposes and by which companies, remains untransparent to this day, another point \u00c4gT criticises. Almost two decades of pressure<\/h2>\n

\u00c4rzte gegen Tierversuche and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) have fought the Botox tests for almost twenty years. In 2023 they handed more than 164,000 signatures<\/strong> from across Europe to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which then put the issue on its agenda. The campaigns “Stoppt Botox-Tierversuche” (\u00c4gT) and “Stop Botox Animal Testing!” (ECEAE) are currently running.<\/p>\n

First the rabbits, now the mice<\/h2>\n

The EDQM's announcement carries a remarkable title: “First rabbits, now mice”. It describes a pattern: the European Pharmacopoeia has already scrapped the pyrogen test on rabbits<\/a> (article in German), and now the Botox mouse test is next. Animal-free methods are replacing, one by one, tests that were considered irreplaceable for decades.<\/p>\n

And the pressure is currently coming from the courtrooms too: almost simultaneously, the Cologne Administrative Court prohibited a parabiosis experiment at the University of Bonn in which two mice were to be stitched together. The details are in our article on the ruling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Only until 31 August: petition against Germany's animal testing law<\/p>\n

In parallel, the final days are running on the Bundestag petition against Germany's planned animal testing law, which ten organisations say would weaken animal protection. Over 65,000 people have signed, the quorum has long been met, and signing is possible only until 31 August<\/strong>.
