Buying tofu used to be simple. Since the Theo M\u00fcller group took over tofu pioneer Berief, the chiller aisle reads like a shareholding chart: Behind friendly plant-based branding sit dairy corporations, meat processors and financial investors. If you want to know where your money ends up, you have to dig through the company register. So we did.<\/p>\n

Independent brands include Taifun, Lord of Tofu, Tofu Nagel, Alberts, Wheaty\/Veggyness, SOTO, Soyana, Vly and endori.<\/strong> Berief has belonged to the Theo M\u00fcller dairy group since July 2026, Alpro and Provamel belong to Danone, Simply V to cheese group Hochland, Garden Gourmet to Nestl\u00e9.<\/p>\n

How we sorted the brands<\/h2>\n

Three groups, one simple logic. Green<\/strong> means: The brand belongs to itself, a founding family or its own people. Yellow<\/strong> means: There is a corporation or investor behind it, but not one whose core business is animals. Red<\/strong> means: A meat or dairy corporation earns money with every purchase.<\/p>\n

Our basis: German company register data (via northdata.de<\/a>), legal notices, company statements and trade press. Every rating is linked right at the brand. What we cannot prove, we do not claim. And because ownership changes, the date of our last check sits at the bottom of the article.<\/p>\n

Green: These brands are independent<\/h2>\n

The good news first: A large share of the tofu in organic stores, and increasingly in supermarkets, comes from companies that own themselves. Unfold the brands you care about.<\/p>\n

\nTaifun (and former second brand Tukan)<\/summary>\n

Taifun-Tofu GmbH from Freiburg, called Life Food GmbH until 2017, is run by co-founder Wolfgang Heck; the shareholder is its own holding company, no corporation involved (company register via Northdata<\/a>). The supermarket second brand Tukan, with identical recipes, is being folded into Taifun according to BioHandel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nLord of Tofu<\/summary>\n

A family business from L\u00f6rrach, run as a partnership by D\u00f6rte and Freddy Ulrich, with its own tofu factory (legal notice<\/a>, profile in the Badische Zeitung<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nTofu Nagel<\/summary>\n

TOFU Manufaktur Christian Nagel GmbH, founded in Hamburg in 1984 and now based in Ramsen, is run by Johannes Puls-Nagel and Alexander Bauer (legal notice<\/a>, company register<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nAlberts (tempeh and lupin)<\/summary>\n

A brand of the mid-sized Purvegan GmbH from Ramsen, run by Alexander Bauer and Hermann Kr\u00e4mer (company site<\/a>). Connected to Tofu Nagel through people and location, with no corporation behind either.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nWheaty and Veggyness (Topas)<\/summary>\n

Both brands belong to TOPAS GmbH from M\u00f6ssingen, the seitan specialist founded by Klaus Gaiser in 1993. Today the second generation runs the family business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nSOTO<\/summary>\n

SOTO organic veggie food GmbH from Bad Endorf is a Bavarian family business owned by the Schramm family, founded in 1988 (wer-zu-wem<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nSoyana<\/summary>\n

The Swiss company from Schlieren belongs to founder Walter D\u00e4nzer and describes itself as explicitly independent and self-financed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nVly<\/summary>\n

Berlin-based VF Nutrition GmbH is a founder-led startup with venture investors, among them Rocket Internet as a minority investor<\/a>. Based on publicly available information, no meat or dairy corporation is among them.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nendori and The New Originals Company<\/summary>\n

According to the company register<\/a>, endori food GmbH & Co. KG from Stegaurach is owned by the B\u00fcse and Wedel families. The affiliated The New Originals Company took over the tofu plant in Wiesbaum in 2024 (The Plant Base<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

Yellow: Corporate, yes. Animal business, no.<\/h2>\n

This is where it becomes a matter of perspective. These brands belong to investors or food groups, but not to a company whose core business is meat or dairy. If you only want to avoid the animal industry, you can shop here. If you would rather not feed corporate structures at all, look one group up.<\/p>\n

\nOatly<\/summary>\n

Publicly listed; the largest shareholder, according to SEC filings<\/a>, is a joint venture of Belgian investor Verlinvest and Chinese state-owned conglomerate China Resources, with Blackstone as another major shareholder. Not a dairy group, but hardly a handshake-culture oat farm either.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nJoya and Natumi<\/summary>\n

Both belong, via Vienna-based Mona Naturprodukte, to the US natural-foods group Hain Celestial (company statement<\/a>, JUVE on the Natumi takeover<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nNaturli'<\/summary>\n

Danish Naturli' Foods is a subsidiary of the Dragsb\u00e6k group, majority-owned by Norwegian consumer goods group Orkla (Just Food<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nLikeMeat<\/summary>\n

Fully owned since 2020 by the LIVEKINDLY Collective, an all-plant-based brand group (vegconomist<\/a>). Honesty requires the backstory: Until then, meat group heristo held the majority of the brand.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nViana (Tofutown)<\/summary>\n

Tofutown was acquired in 2024 by the UK-based Vegan Food Group, an all-vegan company group (Just Food<\/a>). The Wiesbaum tofu plant later went to Germany's The New Originals Company, see above.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

Red: A meat or dairy corporation earns along<\/h2>\n

The products in this group remain vegan. But the profit flows to companies whose core business is milk or meat. That was exactly the sore point of the Berief takeover by M\u00fcller<\/a>, and Berief is no outlier.<\/p>\n

\nBerief<\/summary>\n

Fully part of the Theo M\u00fcller group since early July 2026; the deal was announced in May and closed after antitrust clearance in Germany and Austria (vegconomist<\/a>). We covered the details in our background article on the takeover<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nAlpro and Provamel<\/summary>\n

Both have belonged to dairy and food group Danone since the WhiteWave takeover in 2017. The organic brand Provamel is currently being replaced by “Alpro Organic” according to BioHandel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nSimply V<\/summary>\n

The cheese-alternative brand belongs to Bavarian cheese group Hochland and has been integrated into Hochland Deutschland GmbH (Vegpool<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nGarden Gourmet<\/summary>\n

A Nestl\u00e9 brand<\/a>, owned by the world's largest food corporation with a substantial dairy business.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nR\u00fcgenwalder M\u00fchle<\/summary>\n

The special case: R\u00fcgenwalder is itself a sausage maker that also runs Germany's best-known veggie line. Since late 2023, Cologne sugar dynasty Pfeifer & Langen has held the majority (Handelsblatt<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

\nHeirler<\/summary>\n

The health-food-store brand has belonged, via the H\u00fcgli group, to Switzerland's Bell Food Group since 2018, one of Europe's largest meat processors (BioHandel<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/details>\n

What about private-label tofu from Aldi, Lidl and dm?<\/h2>\n

The uncomfortable answer: Retailers do not disclose who produces their discounter and drugstore tofu. What is on record: Berief runs its own private-label vehicle, SOJA Food GmbH (company register via Northdata<\/a>), and produces private labels for drugstores and discounters according to Augsburger Allgemeine<\/a>. Which product comes from which factory is not public. That is why you will not find a “Aldi tofu is made by X” list here. If you want certainty with private labels, you currently have one option: Buy brands whose owners are on the record.<\/p>\n

Why ownership matters at all<\/h2>\n

You could dismiss this whole debate as bean counting. The tofu stays vegan no matter who owns the factory. But the maths reaches beyond the plate: Every euro of profit strengthens the company behind it, its loans, its lobbying, its next investment. With a dairy group, it flows into a business model built on using animals.<\/p>\n

The scale is not a matter of feeling: In Germany alone, around 746 million land animals were slaughtered in 2025, 48.5 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses plus 697.3 million chickens, turkeys and ducks (Destatis<\/a>), fish not counted. That these are sentient beings is scientific consensus (New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness, 2024<\/a>) and written into EU law (Art. 13 TFEU<\/a>).<\/p>\n

That is why the ownership question is more than a detail for many people. It has little to do with purity and a lot to do with where market power accumulates. If you would rather give your money to companies that have worked without animals from day one, the green group offers plenty of choice. Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n

Is Berief tofu no longer vegan?<\/h3>\n

It still is. The takeover changes nothing about the products and recipes for now; according to vegconomist, Berief will continue as a largely independent unit. The question is a different one: The profit now lands with a dairy corporation. Whether that is a dealbreaker is up to you.<\/p>\n

Does Taifun belong to a corporation?<\/h3>\n

No. Taifun-Tofu GmbH belongs to itself through its own holding company and is run by its co-founder. You can verify this in the company register; the link sits right at the brand above.<\/p>\n

Who makes the tofu sold by Aldi, Lidl and dm?<\/h3>\n

That is not public. What is documented: Berief supplies private labels through SOJA Food GmbH, without any individual product being attributable. Retailers also switch suppliers regularly. Nothing more precise can be said seriously, and we will not pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n

How can I check who owns a brand myself?<\/h3>\n

Three steps are enough: The legal notice on the brand’s website names the operating company. Look that company up on northdata.de to see shareholders and holdings. And the brand name plus “takeover” in a news search surfaces the rest. Five minutes, works for any brand, including those not on this list.<\/p>\n
