Penalties for fishermen
The new rules also aim to harmonize sanctions among member states. Until now, penalties for fishermen for violations of fishing quotas and other regulations have been extremely variable. For this reason, in the future, penalties will be calculated based on the monetary value of the catch. This means that people who clearly violate the reform will face penalties at least twice the average value of the fish caught.
Threat to biodiversity
Another problem with overfishing is uncontrolled bycatch. Marine life that is not supposed to be caught ends up in fishing nets unintentionally. Furthermore, most of these creatures are thrown back into the water dead or severely injured. As a result, an estimated 40 percent of the global fish catch ends up as bycatch. Especially endangered species like dolphins, sharks or sea turtles are affected by this problem. To counteract this, fishermen are instructed to bring bycatch ashore under the so-called landing obligation. However, it has been difficult to control this without monitoring systems. Through the new controls, this should change in the future!
