The European Parliament has heard the citizens’ initiative ‘Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics’ to ban animal testing! For a year, the initiative collected signatures in all EU states to campaign for the end of animal testing in the cosmetics industry. Over 1.2 million EU citizens have signed ‘Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics’. Last week the citizens’ initiative was heard by the European Parliament!
‘Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics’ aims to achieve three main goals with the petition : To strengthen and protect the ban on animal testing in the cosmetics industry, to modernize science, and to reshape chemical regulation in the EU. Animal testing for cosmetic products has been banned in the EU since 2013. However, animal testing for certain ingredients, mostly chemicals, is still allowed. Despite the posted ban on animal testing in 2013, thousands of animals are tortured and killed for cosmetic products every year. The campaign is supported by the two well-known cosmetics companies The Body Shop and Dove , which for years cosmetics without animal testing strongly.
To test the safety and efficacy of cosmetic products, animals such as rabbits, mice, rats and guinea pigs are often used. The animals are bred specifically for animal testing and spend their lives in laboratories. However, animal testing is not necessary to test the safety of cosmetic products! Animal-free tests are even much more reliable. Alternative testing methods include such things as in vitro testing, computer modeling, and working with human volunteers. These methods are often faster, less expensive and more ethical than animal testing. In addition, many companies in the cosmetics industry have taken voluntary initiatives to end the use of animal testing. Numerous brands mark their products with labels such as “animal-free”, “cruelty-free” or “vegan”.
For a citizens’ initiative to be heard by the European Parliament, at least 1 million signatures are required. The result of the ‘Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics’ initiative shows, more than enough people want a definite ban on animal testing! The Commission has until the end of July 2023 to respond to the initiative. Then we will see whether the EU Commission is ready to implement the demand of over 1.2 million people!
