According to a study by the AOK health insurance fund,every third child in Germany eatsalmost no meat. Berlin children consume the least meat compared to their peers in other German states.
The results of the study shed light on the eating habits of young people and provide interesting insights into the trend toward an increasingly low-meat diet in the capital.

Plant-based is the trend
Flexitarian, vegetarian or vegan: Children in Germany are eating less and less meat. Nationwide, every third child now eats almost completely meatless! Berlin clearly leads the ranking! About 47% of all children in the capital eat meat very rarely or not at all, according to the family study! For the study, 8,500 parents across Germany were surveyed on behalf of their children between the ages of 4 and 14.
Results of the study
The trend toward a plant-based diet is clear. Berlin leads the ranking with 47%. Baden-Württemberg takes second place with 42%. And many children in Bremen (41%) and Hamburg (39%) also avoid meat. The situation is somewhat different in the eastern German states. Brandenburg, Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt fared much worse, with just under 25%. The last place is occupied by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Only 21% of respondents have a reduced-meat diet.
In the future veggie
Clearly fewer children eat a purely vegan diet. In Berlin, it is 3% of respondents, and only 1% in Germany as a whole. The study also shows that some parents exhibit problematic competence in the area of healthy eating. In Berlin, that’s about 25%. To reduce the discernible gap between nutrition literacy and educational attainment, changes should be made, especially in schools. Daniela Teichert , CEO of AOK Nordost , is calling for nutrition to be made compulsory in the curricula of German schools.
