Is Alicia Silverstone Vegan? 28 Years and Still the Blueprint

Before veganism had venture capital, before oat milk had a stock ticker, before a single influencer had ever said “plant-based girlie”, there was Alicia Silverstone, going vegan in 1998 because of a conversation she had with her own dog.
Not a metaphorical conversation. She looked at her rescue dog and asked herself the question that ended it all, as she told Vegan Food & Living: “If I’m not willing to eat you, how can I continue to eat these other creatures?” Twenty-eight years later, she still hasn’t found a counterargument.
Yes, Alicia Silverstone is vegan, since 1998, which makes her one of Hollywood's longest-running vegans. She's a PETA Honorary Director, appeared on PETA's January 2026 vegan celebrities list, and reaffirmed the whole story on a podcast in September 2025. She half-jokingly calls herself “99.9% vegan”, a warrior rather than a purist.

What 28 years of plants did for her
Silverstone’s health claims are unusually specific, which makes them more interesting than the usual celebrity glow talk. After going vegan, she says she ditched her asthma inhaler, stopped needing allergy shots twice a week, and stopped the recurring rounds of antibiotics for bronchitis. Her summary on Armchair Expert in September 2025: “Everything changed about my health.”
But the core motive never moved: “Choosing this way of eating, you save so many animals. I did this because I love animals.”

The “99.9% vegan” honesty
On a podcast a few years back, Silverstone described herself as “99.9% vegan”, a “vegan warrior” rather than a “perfect vegan”. We’re mentioning it because honesty is the whole point of these checks, and because her version of imperfection is more committed than most people’s version of perfect: 28 years, a vegan kid, a vitamin company and a PETA directorship. If that’s the 99.9%, the missing 0.1% can live.
