James Cameron doesn’t do things halfway. He didn’t make a boat movie, he rebuilt the Titanic. He didn’t visit the ocean, he piloted a submarine to the deepest point on Earth, alone. So when his wife Suzy Amis Cameron showed him the documentary Forks Over Knives in 2012, the result was predictably absolute: “24 hours later, our whole pantry and refrigerator was cleaned up.”

Fourteen years later, in a February 2026 interview, he confirmed the surge of energy from that switch “has lasted until now. I still have tons of energy.” The man who filmed Avatar sequels underwater is not the fatigue-poster-child the anti-vegan crowd was hoping for.

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, James Cameron is vegan, since 2012, and he confirmed it as recently as February 2026. He prefers his own invented label, “futurevore”, and has put serious money behind it: a pea-protein plant, The Game Changers, and vegan catering on the Avatar sets.

Last fact-checked: July 7, 2026

The environmentalist’s math

Cameron’s case for plants is characteristically blunt, delivered as a challenge: “You can’t be an environmentalist, you can’t be an ocean steward without truly walking the walk; and you can’t walk the walk in the world of the future, the world ahead of us, the world of our children, not eating a plant-based diet.”

And on the meat-and-masculinity mythology, from the February 2026 interview: “We are indoctrinated with that since the time we’re born, essentially. It turns out you don’t need meat, and in fact, it’s unhealthy.” He didn’t just say that, he produced the receipts: The Game Changers, the 2018 documentary about plant-based elite athletes, exists because Cameron and his wife executive-produced it.

2012: the 24-hour purge
Suzy shows him Forks Over Knives. Within a day, the pantry and refrigerator are cleared of animal products. The same year, he pilots the Deepsea Challenger to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
2017: Verdient Foods
He founds an organic pea-protein facility in Saskatchewan, Canada. Directors buy vineyards; Cameron bought a protein plant.
2018: The Game Changers
He executive-produces the plant-based athlete documentary that launched a thousand gym arguments. Suzy publishes her book OMD the same year.
2020: the $140M exit
Ingredion takes full ownership of Verdient as part of a $140M plant-protein investment. The bet paid off, literally.
2022: “futurevore”
He coins his own replacement for the word vegan: “We're eating the way people will eat in the future.” Meanwhile the Avatar sequel sets run on plant-based catering.
February 2026: 14 years confirmed
“That surge has lasted until now. I still have tons of energy.” Fresh, first-person, unambiguous.

The plant-protein industrialist

Most celebrity vegans invest in a burger brand and call it a day. Cameron built supply chain. Verdient Foods processed organic peas at industrial scale before pea protein was cool, and exited into a $140M Ingredion expansion. With Peter Jackson he set up a plant-based food venture in New Zealand. Suzy runs a roughly $300M vegan investment vehicle. The Camerons don’t participate in the plant-based economy. They’re building chunks of it.

The Game Changers connects him to two other names on our list: Lewis Hamilton backed it, and Novak Djokovic executive-produced alongside.
