Somewhere in the mid-90s, at the height of Wu-Tang’s first reign, RZA bit into a chicken wing and had a thought that ruined it forever: this is a dead bird. Not dinner. A dead bird.

That thought did what thoughts sometimes do. Red meat went in 1995, poultry in 1996, fish in 1997, and by around 2000 the Abbot of the Wu-Tang Clan was fully vegan. Nearly three decades later, at 56, he told Men’s Health he still benches 225 pounds on a strictly plant-based tour diet. The math on “you need meat for strength” keeps not working out.

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, RZA is vegan, meat-free since 1995 and fully vegan for roughly a quarter century. In July 2025, on Wu-Tang's final tour, he detailed his strictly plant-based routine to Men's Health. According to PETA, he's converted most of the Clan along the way.

“No animal needs to die for me to live”

RZA’s argument for veganism is the shortest one on our entire list, delivered straight to Joe Rogan in 2019: “No animal needs to die for me to live, okay?” His other recurring line does the philosophy in six words: it makes no sense putting “dead flesh” into a “live body”.

There’s a spiritual layer too. His plant-based discipline runs parallel to his kung fu, qigong and chess practice, all of it part of the same self-mastery project he’s run since the 36 Chambers days. The July 2025 Men’s Health feature reads accordingly: avocado toast for breakfast, lentils and fennel for lunch, fruit through the day, twice-daily training. “Fitness is everything. When you’re on stage and you’re moving an hour, 90 minutes, sometimes two hours, your legs got to be in shape.”

The Wu-Tang effect

Here’s the stat that makes RZA more consequential than almost any celebrity vegan: according to PETA, roughly 80% of the Wu-Tang Clan is now vegan, largely through his influence. One man’s chicken-wing epiphany quietly converted most of the greatest rap group ever assembled. That’s not influencer marketing. That’s the Abbot doing what abbots do.

Hip-hop and hardcore both built vegan traditions decades before wellness culture arrived. For the punk side of that story, read our checks on Moby and Travis Barker.
