Glucosamine is a joint-support supplement a lot of people take for stiff knees and aging cartilage. It’s also one that quietly trips up vegans, because the standard version isn’t made in a lab from plants. It’s made from shellfish shells. So if you’re asking “is glucosamine vegan,” the default answer is no, most of it comes from crab, shrimp and lobster.

There’s a clean vegan alternative that’s chemically identical, though, and it’s easy to spot once you know the words.

Why standard glucosamine isn’t vegan

Glucosamine is a compound your body uses to build and repair cartilage. Supplement makers get it from chitin, the tough material in the exoskeletons of shellfish. Crab, shrimp and lobster shells (often a byproduct of the seafood industry) are processed to extract it. That’s the cheap, dominant method, so most glucosamine on the shelf, whether glucosamine sulfate or glucosamine hydrochloride, is shellfish-derived and not vegan. It’s also a genuine allergen risk for anyone with a shellfish allergy, which is another reason to check.

The fermented vegan version

The vegan route skips the sea entirely. Glucosamine can be produced by fermenting plant sugars, typically from corn, giving a product that’s identical at the molecular level to the shellfish kind, just made by microbes instead of crustaceans. It’s usually branded clearly (GlucosaGreen is the common trade name) and marketed as vegan or shellfish-free. It costs a little more, but it’s widely available.
