Hummus is so smooth and creamy that a lot of people assume there must be milk or yogurt somewhere in the mix. There isn’t. Classic hummus is completely dairy-free, and it’s vegan too. That velvety texture comes from blended chickpeas and tahini, not cream.

So if you’re avoiding dairy, whether you’re vegan, lactose-intolerant or just checking, hummus is almost always a safe bet. Almost. Here are the few exceptions worth knowing.

QUICK ANSWER

No, classic hummus does not contain dairy, and it's vegan. The traditional recipe is just chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and salt. No milk, cream or yogurt. The only exceptions are some flavored or deli-style tubs that add yogurt, labneh, feta or cream, so check those labels.

Why hummus tastes creamy without any cream

The creaminess is a bit of a magic trick. Chickpeas, once cooked soft and blended, break down into a smooth, thick base. Tahini, a paste of ground sesame seeds, adds richness and a silky mouthfeel that reads a lot like dairy. Olive oil rounds it off. Between them you get something that feels indulgent and creamy while being entirely plant-based. No cow required.

That’s also why hummus is such a staple for vegans and anyone cutting dairy: it delivers the creamy-dip experience that would normally come from sour cream or cheese, without any of it.

When hummus might have dairy

Traditional hummus is safe, but the supermarket has gotten creative, and a few versions do slip dairy in:

  • Flavored or “deli-style” tubs that add yogurt or cream for extra richness
  • Feta-topped or feta-blended hummus (obviously contains cheese)
  • Some restaurant versions finished with a yogurt swirl or butter
  • Rare “extra creamy” formulations that use dairy to get there

None of these are the norm, and all of them declare milk as an allergen, so a quick glance at the label settles it. If it lists only chickpeas, tahini, oil, lemon, garlic and spices, you’re fine.
